WATER

Reverse osmosis

Reverse osmosis is the finest filtration known. This process will allow the removal of particles as small as ions from a solution. Reverse osmosis is used to purify water and remove salts and other impurities in order to improve the color, taste or properties of the fluid. The most common use for reverse osmosis is in purifying water. It is used to produce pure water that meets the most demanding specifications.

Reverse osmosis uses a semi-permeable membrane, allowing the water that is being purified to pass through it, while rejecting the minerals present in the water. Generally Reverse osmosis technology uses a process known as cross flow to allow the membrane to continually clean itself. As some of the water passes through the membrane the rest continues downstream, removing the rejected species away from the membrane. The process of reverse osmosis requires a driving force or a High Pressure Pump to push the water through the membrane, The higher the minerals or dissolved solids present in the water, the larger the driving force or pressure requirement.

Reverse osmosis is capable of up to 99.5 % salt rejection and being the finest membrane available. It is very much prone for fouling with various contaminants such as colloids, heavy metals, oil & grease etc. RO membranes are also not able to tolerate the chlorine. Therefore, while designing a RO system, proper pretreatment process has to be taken into consideration.

UTICO manufactures reverse osmosis membranes in the spiral membrane configuration which

  • Retains salts and organics
  • Passes essentially only water
  • Passes molecules in the range of 5 Angstroms (0.0005 micron) or 100 MWCO

Ultrafiltration:

Utico's technology uses hollow fiber / flat sheet membrane, however, due to its configuration, its main use is in pigment separation, dairy application, dye extraction, oil removal, beverages, pharma etc apart from water pretreatment. Being a finer membrane it needs some pretreatment such as media filtration for its smoother operation. Ultra-filtration also ensures complete removal of suspended and colloidal impurities as well as bacteria to make the water suitable for drinking applications as well as for RO Pretreatment.

Ultra-filtration is capable of concentrating bacteria, some proteins, some dyes, and constituents that have a larger molecular weight of greater than 10,000 daltons. Ultra-filtration is not much dependent upon the charge of the particle and is more concerned with the size of the particle.

Mechanical Vapor Compression

Utico's MVC units are fully automatic, electrically operated, self-contained packages featuring push-button operation. Units are produced in various standard models, including small versions for individual hotels and power plants, or larger units with different capacities for tourist centers and industrial installations. Utico's MVC units are available with production capacity from 50 m3/day to 1500 m3/day in a single unit, with larger plants being realized by multiple unit installations.

Utico's MVC Highlights:

Low Temperature Seawater Distillation
  • Electrically Driven
  • Superior Reliability and Availability
  • Simple and Economical Operation & Maintenance
  • High Quality Product (2ppm)
  • Capacities: 50 - 1500 cubic-meter/day per unit

Utico's MVC units are the units of choice where electricity from the grid or diesel generator is the available power source, because they utilize the highly efficient evaporative condensers in single or multiple effect configurations. A unique centrifugal compressor, is the source of the heat input to the unit.

Multi-Effect Distillation

Utico's MED units are recommended when large quantities of water are required. MED plants derive their energy from low pressure or industrial process steam. MED units are unique in their ability to recycle waste heat from thermal power plants, diesel generators, OR industrial processes. Utico's MED units are available with production capacity of up to 5000 m3/day in a single unit, with larger plants being realized by multiple unit installations.

Utico's MED Highlights:
  • Low Temperature Seawater Distillation
  • Low Pressure Steam Driven (Optional: Cogeneration Scheme / Waste Heat Recovery)
  • Simple and Economical Operation & Maintenance
  • High Quality Product (5ppm)
  • Capacities: 500 - 5000 cubic-meter/day per unit

Utico's MED units are comprised of a train of evaporative-condensers with a heat rejection condenser at the end. The low temperature differential allowance on each evaporator (effect) in the train allows a large number of effects to be utilized while maintaining a low brine discharge temperature, thus significantly increasing the Gain Output Ratio (GOR - a measure of energy efficiency). MED units use low pressure steam as source of energy.

Where higher pressure steam is available (over 2.0 ata), the plant can be supplied with a thermal vapor compression (TVC) unit. Using a steam jet thermo-compressor to recycle part of the vapor in the unit further increases thermal efficiency.

MED units are available with capacities of up to 5000 cum/day in a single unit, with larger plants being realized by multiple unit installations.
